Al Tamimi & Company has appointed Paul Turner as regional head of its arbitration group. Turner joins the firm from the London office of Clyde & Co, where he was a litigation partner specialiSing in cross-border disputes across the Middle East with a particular focus on Iraq, Iran and Libya.
A major part of his practice is representing clients in international trade arbitrations. In the Middle East, he has recently acted for the Republic of Iraq in recovering misappropriated real estate following the departure of Saddam Hussein, as well as for the Libyan Government, and a member of the Gaddaffi family, in a number of defamation cases. He has also acted for the Gaddaffi Foundation and represented the Iranian Government in a major steel supply dispute with Kuwait.
Turner believes his move is ideally timed – coming just as a number of countries in the region are looking to improve their dispute resolution and arbitration capabilities. “The Middle East is a region of immense opportunity for growth and development and, with the end of the financial crisis, most of the key jurisdictions are looking to enhance their dispute resolution legislation and strengthen their regulatory regimes,” he said.
