"How do I get into ALB's Hot 100?" was a common question posed by readers towards the latter stages of last year, following publication of our inaugural list of 'Hot' lawyers from around the region.
On closer examination, however, it could be considered a blessing if you found yourself omitted from the list of practitioners.
You see, the extent of how 'Hot' you are - as judged by ALB - is the extent to which you warranted coverage in the magazine over the preceding 12 months.
We most certainly cover the good: one thinks of rainmakers this year such as MoFo's Steven Toronto, Paul Weiss' Jeanette Chan, Simpson Thacher's David Sneider and Latham's Michael Sturrock, to name a few.
But we also cover the bad and the ugly (and this year we HAVE been churlish enough to apportion lawyer to category). ALB's 'Hot 100' list of lawyers covers all manner of sins. And we have of course tried to be representative with jurisdictions - which is where ALB's sister publications, ALB China and Australasian Legal Business, have proved a most valuable source.
You will agree with the inclusion of some of your fellow practitioners, and you will no doubt disagree with our selection of others. You may eve n feel that you warrant a place in the list yourself - and if that is the case we would be more than happy to hear from you.
But while the corporate communications people harp on about the importance of a firm's branding, culture and critical mass, the business of law at the end of the day is run by individuals. And individuals are what we care about here.
We hope, the refore, that you .nd the following pages of interest, and of course entertaining. Think of it as a review of the year just gone! ALB
