Baker & McKenzie has hired James Kwan as a partner in its China dispute resolution practice. Kwan, who will join the firm on 1 March, comes from the Hong Kong office of Simmons & Simmons where he was also a partner.
Kwan’s practice focuses on international commercial arbitration and litigation, with a focus on infrastructure, engineering and energy disputes. He has been involved in disputes and arbitrations across Asia, the Middle East and Europe and is widely recognised as one of the foremost disputes lawyers in the region.
“James is one of the stars of the new generation of arbitration practitioners in Hong Kong,” said Michael Moser, chairman of the HKIAC. “He is smart, experienced, hard-working and has excellent people skills.
The match can only be a "win-win" for both James and his new firm. I wish them all the best.” Kwan sits as an arbitrator with the LCIA, DIAC and CIETAC panels, and has recently been appointed the Asia Regional Coordination Committee co-chair of the ICC Young Arbitrators’ Forum, and is the co-chair of the Australasian Forum for International Arbitration.
Gary Seib, head of the firm’s global dispute resolution group, said the appointment of Kwan will help the firm “augment its sector focus on energy and infrastructure disputes,” as well as allowing the firm to capitalize on opportunities arising out of the growth of China outbound transactions.ALB
